
In March 2026, Rob Legtenberg presented Sabratha, with a NanoLabNL voucher. This voucher enables Sabratha to redeem hours in the cleanroom of the MESA+ NanoLab, located in Enschede, for comprehensive training, expert guidance, and the use of cutting-edge equipment.
Wafer-scale, foundry-standard process development for high-performance TFLN photonic integrated circuits enabling next-generation optical and RF systems
This project focuses on scaling up the fabrication of Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) photonic integrated circuits. It integrates key components such as high-speed modulators and microring resonators into a manufacturable, wafer-scale process. Building on work at the MESA+ NanoLab, the process will be further developed towards a foundry-compatible, high-throughput production flow. Key project objectives include:
Scaling to wafer-level production (100 mm)
Reducing optical losses and improving efficiency
Developing high-performance modulators and resonators
Enabling reliable, repeatable manufacturing
This development will enable scalable production of TFLN photonic chips in the Netherlands, addressing a key gap in the photonics ecosystem. It positions Sabratha to deliver high-performance solutions for applications such as data centre interconnects, 6G communication and quantum technologies.
